Explaining why Uncle Tony is not married...to a 5 year old

I knew this day would come, didn't I?

The day when my incredible cute, innocent, witty and to smart for her own good, daughter would ask the questions that I really did not want to answer at this AGE.

It was a sunny afternoon. She had completed day #2 of Safety City, got to spend some time at home with just Mom and Dad before we had to go get sissy.  I loaded her into the car to make the 20 + minute drive to get my little one and we were cruising along when, out of the quiet backseat the question echos through the plush gray interior of the SUV.

"Mom, why isn't Uncle Tony married?"

Thinking on my feet (which in this case was the ONLY way to handle the shock that was ensuing through me!)

"Well, not everyone has to get married and it is kind of a complicated thing that we will be sure to talk about when you are older."  Up until TODAY, this explanation had done fine, but not today. Of course not, right!

Today I got the song and dance act, "Mom, I am older, tell me, please, tell me now!"

Um, no is my GUT reaction.  I will NOT tell her that Uncle Tony is living an alternative lifestyle.  In no way am I ashamed or embarrassed, but does a 5 year old, who is not around her Uncle Tony but maybe once a year, and does not know his partner- need to know his life?  I mean, I could tell her that Uncle Tony is engaged to Cliff- in which I am certain I would get a weird look and a "Mom, Cliff is not a girl's name."  Again, innocence is bliss.

Instead, I took the high road.  "Uncle Tony doesn't have to be married to be happy."  Then, after a minute where my words were registering in my sweet girls head, "But You and Daddy are married and your Happy, so why doesn't Uncle Tony get married and be happy married like he is Happy not married?"  Ahh.. Good Argument child!

Ugh, it is a sticky situation and after a lot of grumbles from her, and a lot of me telling her we would talk about all that when she gets older, she finally had one final thing to say: "I am getting married, Mom and I will be happy."  Simply put and she had dropped it.

How would you handle this?  How do you think I handled this?

I am not sure if I handled this right, or if there was a better way, but I feel like,  do I really need to educate my kid at 5?  I don't think that she would comprehend- although maybe that is me not giving her enough credit!  It is a hot topic and with the off the wall questions that I do get from this kid, it would weight heavy on her mind. (excuses, excuses, right!)

I think that I am going to address this with my Brother, Uncle Tony himself!  See what his feedback is.  We are very open about everything.  He is living his life, in Sunny Cali and with a partner who fits in well with our family.  All I asked of him is to find happiness and that, it seems, he has!  I find nothing wrong with the way he lives his life- but it does pose the questions of when to inform the kids.  The kicker is that Uncle Tony just visited in March (I think?) and whenever he does visit, it is always alone- which makes my kiddos think that he lives all by himself. The questions have not ever came up until the other day.  (They adore Uncle Tony!)

This parenting thing is not as easy as it might seem!  Some subjects can easily get swept under the rug but some subjects just do not go away. (Death was a tough one for my 5 year old and we still have bouts of tears every once in a while as she talks about how much she misses her Grandma Lucy- whom she has never met, but we do discuss her a lot.)

Day #20 CHALLENGE- T MINUS 8 DAYS....

Day #20 and BONUS It's FRIDAY!!!

(that also means that tomorrow is REST DAY!)

We keep progressing, adding to our workout little by little.  It might not seem like much to the naked eye, but when you are the one crunching and squatting, I can feel the intensity building!

PERSPECTIVE:
Everyone is doing great and we are all "Killing It"- so keep it up - we seriously have 8 Workout Days left - 2 are REST Days!

I guess it is time to get the CHALLENGE for the day, right!  I need ENERGY here!  I need EXCITEMENT!

OUR CHALLENGE:
74 sit ups
128 crunches
80s plank
40 pushups
58 Jumping Jacks
50 High Knees
28 Squats
29 Lunges (per leg)

Keep watching your portions when you eat, this will help aid you in meeting your mark. Portions are key.

Any results to share?  I am down 5 inches in my waist and I seem to have a fluctuating scale (uh hum...) but for the past two solid days, I am reading 2 lbs lost. I seem to be holding also, so that is very important. I am finding my arms, legs and stomach more toned (I have a long way to go, but it is a starting point!) and just overall, I feel so much better!

I would definitely recommend incorporating Shakeology into your daily diet.  There are a lot of nutritional benefits, but on the side I have noticed that my nails are growing and they are not brittle, my hair is much more shiny and manageable and is also growing up a storm. These are notable things because prior to drinking Shakeology, my nails were barley growing and very brittle and my hair was stuck at one length, since January! Plus, I love the energy I am getting from the shakes and the cravings it is taking away from my daily routine. (Seriously have not had a POP in weeks!)

I am also happy to report that I am staying consistent with this Challenge and with the 10 Minute Trainer- which is kicking my butt and I am loving it!

Keep your Focus and Get this Challenge DONE!  If you want to share or having any upcoming ideas, please let me know!

Day #19 CHALLENGE - T-minus 11 days...

#19- Challenge is moving right along!

Today's Challenge:

71 sit ups
119 crunches
75s plank
35 pushups
56 Jumping Jacks
48 High Knees
26 Squats
27 Lunges (per leg)

We still got this.  I should mention that I am still doing this challenge but I am getting another workout that is duplicating the challenge. By using the 10 minute trainer, I am targeting my Cardio, Lower Body and Abs.  Today, I am doing the Total Body trainer and adding in Cardio and Lower Body. I am getting a hard workout, but the proof is in the results and I am losing inches, which feels great!

My food has been consistent.  I took out my Shakeology for the weekend and was really paying for it at the beginning of this week.  I am since back on and feeling wonderful! I am just replacing 1 meal with my Shakeology (Butterfinger is the shake of the week in my house) and that is all it takes! Some days I am replacing my lunch and some days, like today, it makes a great treat for breakfast!  I do replace dinner sometimes, but only when I am getting a balanced lunch in. (still have to have lots of fruits and veggies!)

Midway there- DAY #18... Challenge ACCEPTED!

Who is ready for Day #18?

I will persist until I succeed.

Sadly, I am doing the workouts, but I am having food issues!  My weakness is Roasted Marshmallows.  UGH.  I am still only allowing myself to eat 3 of those roasted delicious puffs of yumminess, but really?  I don't even like Marshmallows and for me to literally be so desperate to pick up my kitchen light wand and light it up into a ball of red hot flames and char the crap out of them..it's just weird!  Summer fever, I think.

Anyways, a slip will not ruin me...set me back, sure, but it will not ruin me and my determination.

So, what's OUR Challenge today?

67 sit ups
110 crunches
70s plank
32 pushups
54 Jumping Jacks
46 High Knees
25 Squats
25 Lunges (per leg)

So, my BIG question today is, has anyone had any hiccups with the workout? Challenge spots?  How are you working through them?

My Hiccup is the Planks.  Those babies are hard.  I am glad we started small but when we have a rest day and jump back into them, I have to admit that it takes me two tries to meet the seconds requested.  Last night, the 65s one caused me to coax myself more than usual, but, I am a bit proud to say that I did it (even in the 87* that our house is sitting at right now).

15 sec day ONE ain't gone stop ME!! 11/30/13

So, bring those Planks!

We keep building the amount of each workout and keep striving towards our goals.  That is what this is all about, please do not lose your focus. Today is just another day, but with the workouts you are making sure tomorrow is a better one!

Staying motivated and dedicated mentally is the most crucial part of weight loss. Reminding myself of my goals every morning, creating rules to reach my goals, being positive about weight loss, loving my body unconditionally whether progress is fast or slow, and celebrating each goal weight has made this very long journey possible.

Thanks for those who are following me, and putting in the work!  I still have  a ways to go but I think that after getting into some shorts (which last summer I did not wear any but maybe twice!) - I feel better and that is the honest to god truth.  Our Summer Kalahari trip is coming up in July and that is where I want to make sure my Tummy is toned - so I have my goal and have to keep working toward it!

A little over a week to go...  eek!

Day #17 Challenge- REALLY?!?!?%*#$

Its DAY #17 already!

Holy Cow this month is flying by!  I can not even believe we have been doing this for 17 days - but I know I am feeling great!

So, who is ready for Day #17's Challenge? (I am eagerly raising my hand!)

64 sit ups
101 crunches
65s plank
30 pushups
52 Jumping Jacks
44  High Knees
24 Squats
23 Lunges (per leg)

Yes, you read that right- 101 CRUNCHES today!

You got this, trust me!

My meals are probably going to be much of the same.  I started with my BIG, TALL Glass of ICE COLD Water this morning and of course, my Oatmeal.  Snack will be a bowl full of Goldfish (a packet) with a Shakeo for lunch (going to try my Butterfinger one again) and then some tomatoes, pita chips and hummus for snack and oven chicken (with olive oil/coconut oil/ basil/Italian seasoning and parsley) with steamed broccoli. I am also putting lots and lots of good old H2O into my day. (Still POP free! Go Me)

I am a bland person and super picky- so my meals will not change much- but please, feel free to add your healthy fix'ins in the comments to share with others.

I am also still going strong with my 10 Minute Trainer DVD series- which is my official GO TO!  Hands down my FAVORITE workout series YET!

Don't forget, if you are interested in PiYo- will be hitting my website soon! PM for details.

Keep going everyone, we SO got this!!!

Family Time ... Father's Day 2014

Family Time

6/15/2014

What is the meaning of Family Time to your Family?

In Honor of Father's Day, and in the honor of the two great Men in my life, my Dad and my Hubby,  I would like to let them both know how much they mean to me.

My Dad has been the best Dad to me through the years and allowed me to learn to be independent and reliable and think before making decisions.

My Hubby has been my rock. He has stood beside me through this life of ours and always had my back in every crazy scheme, decision, idea that I have come up with in the 12 long years that we have been by each others side.  I could not ask for a better life partner or a better Father to our girls. (I am one Lucky girl!)

"I have never been loved and I’m aching to love and to be loved, fearing I never will."
Favorite!!

Yesterday, (Father's Day 2014) - we had a Family Cook-Out and even had my very *favorite cousin, Julie and her hubby, Rick and their daughter, Valerie- here all the way from California. We had a house full and I loved every minute of it!  I think that I was made to entertain (in my own home!) - as I got all the food prepped and ready to go (by myself - go me!) and just enjoyed being within my own (newer) surroundings (Gray Gables).  I love this old house we have and the memories that we are making around it!

The girls were outside playing, getting dirty as all get out (which for my little ladies is a NORM since we moved out here) and riding power wheels (all day) making Cousin Rick a nervous Daddy!  It was nothing short of EPIC, and if I could have Julie and Rick near us all the time, I absolutely WOULD.  (Hubby already informed me that Cali is not on our might move to list though and frankly I am there with him- too darn expensive!)

Family time was happening at old Gray Gables and Memories were being handed out in the spoonfuls.  It was awesome.

What does Family Time mean to your family?

The problem with Families is the drama.  I can not say that mine if Drama free- because it certainly is not.  One day, I hope that everyone can be re-united to the family that I once knew- but until that day, I will take the halves that I do get.  Hopefully, one day, I can find my voice and find a way to make everyone happy (I don't count on this day happening- but hey, it sounds good!)

All in all, when it was time to say goodbye to Cousin Julie & Rick, it was bittersweet. It has been probably 6-7 years since we last saw them, and with my Hubby and his determination NOT to ever FLY- Cali is NOT in our Future!! (tear)

So, until the next time that they make the trip to Ohio (which I am sure is a BORE after living in CALI) we had to say goodbye.  The hardest part was the goodbyes that came from the little cousins- Valerie cryed, my biggest hugged and hugged again and hugged again while stating that she did not want her "Best Friend" to leave and my youngest (who is the same age as Valerie) hugged and hugged and made the same argument apparent- "Best Friends Forever!"

It actually brings back a lot of memories of my childhood.  There was a pact made between Julie, Brandi (my other cousin), Carissa (my other cousin) and myself- as we did *everything together when everyone was around one another.  There were memories of being at our Grandparents house, swimming in the pool, picking raspberries behind the garage, walking in the field to Julie's house...we were all so close. There were the days of Cedar Point and I was always to "short" to ride all the roller coasters the other 3 got to ride. (boo!)  But there are infinite memories that will always be defined within me!

Wishing my girls had cousins to have those same memories with... knowing they do and are starting to create these and although they are not true *cousins, the meaning is the same!

Just as Julie and Rick have been titled Aunt and Uncle.  Closeness makes you family - just as Hubby's cousins have also been deemed this title. (This is the hardest part of Hubby not having siblings and me only having 1 - who is in CALI!)

But, it was a wonderful day, I think everyone had a good time and nice to just get together with everyone and "catch up" every once in a while.  Plus, my Hubby makes a banging BBQ!  LOL!!

Happy Father's day to all the Fathers/Dads/Grandfathers/Uncles/Brothers out there!  (yes, I am a day late!)
